CHAPTER TWELVE

I STOOD AT THE SIDE of the man we’d just snagged outside the restaurant and pulled into the alley. I’d influenced him not to run or be frightened.

“Go ahead, Owen. Just look deep into his eyes and tell him what you want him to do.”

Owen’s impressive height forced him to lean down to get eye-to-eye with the man. “I want you to stand on one foot.”

The man pushed his glasses up on his nose and furrowed his brow. “Why?”

“Really believe it, Owen. Mean it,” I said.

He narrowed his eyes and tried again. “I want you to stand on one foot.”

The man shrugged and lifted his leg.

“I did it!” Owen exclaimed, but I shook my head.

“No. He wouldn’t have questioned it with a shrug.”

“Son of a...,” Owen breathed. “This is harder than it seems.”

“Only the first time. Once you figure it out, it’s easy anytime you do it again. Just try to really believe that you have power over his thoughts and mean what you’re telling him. Put your foot back down,” I said without influencing the man.

He did.

“If he was influenced, he couldn’t do that unless you told him, since you’re the one that influenced him. Watch his pupils. They’ll dilate then constrict if it works.”

Owen exhaled a deep breath and looked deep into the man’s eyes. “I want you to stand on one foot.”

Like a spring had shot his leg off the ground, the man stood obediently on one foot.

“Did I do it?” Owen’s excited eyes met mine. “I think I saw the pupil thing happen!”

“I think you did!” I looked at the man. “Why are you standing on one leg?”

“I don’t know,” he responded with a shrug.

“Put your leg down,” I said without influencing him.

He started to lower his leg but lifted it quickly again. “I can’t. I don’t know why I can’t, but I can’t.”

“Holy shit,” Owen said, eyes widening. “I did it.”

“You did it.” I grinned. “Now, don’t forget to undo your compulsions on things like this. If you don’t, this poor guy will be stuck for eternity standing on one leg.”

“That’s not good.” Owen shook his head, then leaned down. “You can put your leg back down now.”

The man lowered his leg.

“Now, the next part is a little trickier. It’s important to get your wording right when you’re influencing someone to forget about your interactions with them. If you just say, ‘leave and forget me,’ they will still remember what happened, just not who was there. The best thing to say is, ‘Forget what happened here and that we exist. Nothing out of the ordinary happened tonight.’”

Owen nodded and leaned down. “Forget what happened here and that we exist. Nothing out of the ordinary happened tonight.”

The man nodded his head and walked off casually.

“Did it work?” Owen asked.

“Let’s go be certain.” I flashed in front of the man and looked deep into his eyes. “Answer honestly. Do you remember us, or what happened here tonight?”

He furrowed his brow. “No. Nothing out of the ordinary happened tonight.
